Surf's Up!  Cory had surfed in Hawaii a few years ago and wanted to try it again, so surfing was one of the reasons we chose Costa Rica for our family holiday.

Our home owner and neighbour - Van - kindly set up a lesson with a local surfing school at a nearby beach - Playa Pan Dulce.  Looks like we have a good day for it....there can be some large waves in Costa Rica but Pan Dulce is known as a good beginner beach.

The waves here are still higher than what Cory surfed on in Hawaii however..

Some instructions from instructor Pollo (pronounced Poy-yo, the Spanish word for chicken!, go figure).

Under the watchful eye of a "rainbow crow"....

Cory knows all about dryland training!

So he's ready to go surfing!

With higher waves than he's ridden before, Cory is a bit cautious but gets some whoops from Pollo..and gets some good speed going at the end of this video, before ending up in the water....Cory has never enjoyed getting water on his face and you can clearly hear his "puyah!" at the end as he falls in

Waves pushing 2 to 3 feet here it looks like....but when others took a tumble, Cory would always stay on....

Staying low but getting some really nice runs and then stands up a bit more on the last run of the day...

After a couple of hours of riding Playa Pan Dulce's waves, we decide to just sit back and watch those waves back at Tucan Terra.

And a dip in Van's pool next door brings an end to our first week in Costa Rica.  The next day would bring more monkey encounters - and not just capuchins - a drive to yet another spectacular beach, and a visit to the legendary Martina's bar.
