However, it was, at the end of a, once again, sometimes very bumpy uphill dirt road - though nothing like Caba Matapalo Road in the Osa. We had found it on VRBO and it had excellent reviews which turned out to be very well-deserved.
Fiesta del Rio...and a free cooler with our rented SUV, thanks to Vamos Rent a Car....
2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, patio, and pool...
the patio out back, with bbq, and laundry (quite welcome after 9 days on the road!)
and of course Rocket! the owner's dog. Rocket visited us regularly...
the backyard and walkway to the pool...
and the pool, with fridge, bar, washroom & shower....the house in the background...
and the owner's house to the left...
The first local beach we would visit would be Marino Ballena National Park...Ballena is the spanish word for whale and as this aerial photo (not mine) shows, the beach has the shape of a whale's tail...
But before we head out, Jenni has a visual reminder of our day out white-water rafting...she took a bit of a beating back there in the raft, and a week later has the bruises to prove it..but she still had a great time...
The entrance sign to Marino Ballena...all in Spanish as it should be....
but this sign needs no translation!!! Peligro! Cocodrillos!!!!
It's a wide expanse of a beach in both directions...as we begin a long walk towards the end of the whale tail...
looking to the north...
and to the south...
as we approach the end, a look back at the mountainous jungle of Costa Rica behind us...we would be heading up into those mountains in a few days as we continue our trek back to the airport...
Looks like some big waves in the distance but those rocks would make it a tricky trek to get any closer...
so we'll enjoy the gentle shallow waves instead...yes, the three of us are there....that's Cory back there in the water....
a 360....
It's a lovely beach for sure, but we prefer bigger waves so off we go to Playa Hermosa....which is a really laid-back surfer beach, lots of shade, big waves, a small pipas frias (fresh coconuts) stand...even a lifeguard station.....and of course Cory is already back there checking out the waves...and there's even a Costa Rica flag on the beach...
Then it's back to Fiesta del Rio to enjoy some restful time in the pool....with a cold Imperial of course...
and a chance to see one of the world's tiniest birds, the scintillant hummingbird...it's about the size of a thumb and when we first saw it we thought it was a large bumblebee....it is only slightly larger than the world's smallest bird, the bee hummingbird....which you can see here in an internet photo...
I wasn't able to get a photo of the scintillant hummingbird but this is what it looks like...another internet photo....
That's about it for this day in Costa Rica....Cory goes surfing again the next day....leave us a comment, we'd enjoy hearing from you, and you don't need an account to do so. Thanks for dropping in on our blog!
